Beginning in Music

If you’ve dreamed of playing an instrument and getting involved in music but haven’t had the resources or money to pay for years of lessons, then you’ve come to the right place.

Music is an important part of any culture. Being able to pick up an instrument and string notes beautifully together or to follow along an new piece of music and play it comfortably is a skill many of us would love to enjoy, but don’t.  Many would love to learn piano but just haven’t.

For some it might be a lack of time or money, for others it is a lack of self discipline. No matter what your situation, playing an instrument, being a part of a band, or simply being able to read sheet music is attainable.

If you want to play the guitar, you will have to shell out some money for a guitar and if you want to start to teach yourself, you will have to get some sort of instruction. But this shouldn’t discourage you. Everything worth having always has a cost, whether it’s time, money, or something other value.

What type of beginner are you?

What makes you a beginner? Have you never touched a piano or sang a note in your life? Have you sang in chorus in school or in your church choir and now you want to advance? Are you simply new to another instrument?

Whatever type of beginner you are, whether you are a complete novice or just new to another instrument, you will have to work your way up. Don’t worry that as you begin you aren’t making progress. Whether you have exceptional talent or you struggle with music, you will still have to work hard to become a great artist.

What do you want to learn?

Do you want to learn how to read music, sing, or play an instrument? You need to narrow down your goals because music is such a wide field. Most likely you have decided you want to learn to sing or play a specific instrument such as the flute or guitar or learn piano.

Before you do any of these things, you will need to learn to read music. It is not impossible to sing or play music with out being able to read music, but it will be much easier to understand if you do and you will be much more efficient.

Learn Piano

Do you want to learn piano?  Once you have a good understanding of how to read music, you can move onto other instruments such as the piano, or you can learn to play the guitar or another instrument.  There are many ways to do this.  You can hire a teacher, or you can teach yourself.  It all depends on how you learn, what you have time for, and your budget.

Do you want to learn how to sing?  A great thing about singing is that you you don’t need to buy an instrument.  Of course, this shouldn’t be your reason to try singing.

Music is everywhere

We all have our favorite styles, genres, groups, and singers.  There is so much variety to music and there’s no reason why you can’t have a part of it.  If you love music and want to create your own, go for it!
